Every successful voice actor I’ve talked with has had moments or stretches of not booking. It can be scary when voice acting is your primary source of income.

I wish I could give you a “Top Ten Tips to Start Booking Again” list but, in my own experience, it doesn’t come down to a top ten list.

When I am in a rut of not booking, I hyper focus on what I can improve. I ask myself, Why am I NOT Booking?

The problem with that is when you ask NEGATIVE questions, you get NEGATIVE answers.

Why am I not booking?
Because clients are looking for younger voices. I’m getting older.

Why am I not booking?
Because I can’t dedicate my time to my career like I want to.

This can go on and on. Do you see how the question brings up things you’re NOT or that you CAN’T do? 

INSTEAD…
Ask yourself “WHY DO I BOOK?
Then DOUBLE DOWN on that.
Show up loudproud and strong in what you discover.

When there’s an industry full of competition, the way you rise above is by being specific in what you bring to the table. You’re not a voice actor. You’re someone who can bring a message of hopecompassion and light because of your past experiences and empathy. Now focus on potential clients or projects that could use that specific voice.

Sure, I could also tell you to make sure you’re coaching/training/not missing subtle nuances. I could tell you to optimize your online casting profile, your website, your direct marketing. I could tell you to update/upgrade/record new demos. Those are the easy action items. The hardest action item is actually discovering “WHY you’d Book” and what specific giftsyou have to offer and not being afraid to show others. It’s been a process for me, that I’m still working on, and I’m sure it will be a process for you.
