Let me begin by saying, “THANK YOU” for teaching me so much.
Here are 7 things (among many) that I have learned from you.
1| Constantly be a student, aim to be an expert.
You grow more when you are curious. You become more skilled when you seek mastery.
2| Fresh eyes see fewer barriers.
Recently, I’ve been writing screenplays (short films/pilots/etc) and it’s a brand new endeavor. It’s a beautiful thing to have fresh eyes again. It’s made me remember what that was like at the beginning of my VO/acting career and cherish it more.
3| If you don’t have stakes, you don’t have a story.
The greater the barrier for your VO career, the greater the motivation. The greater the motivation, the more you will master it. The more you master it, the greater you will sustain.
4| Move and progress follows.
There are so many people I see who don’t have VO careers just because they didn’t move. They stalled. They waited for someone else to do it. They got paralyzed. That is no judgement. I’ve been there – many times. It’s still a trap sometimes but also a motivator for me. Just move.
5| The question isn’t “Why me?” – it’s “Why NOT me?”
The subtle shift of a question can cause a great shift of your mindset.
6| You don’t have to know everything—you just need to be brave enough to ask.
I’m an anti-helper. By that I mean, I don’t like asking for help. Typical oldest child and some other childhood “trauma or triggers” scattered in there. If only I had asked questions sooner in my career, I’d have been further.
7| Be genuinely interested in others, and they’ll be genuinely drawn to you.
