Today we’re talking VO agent tips! Below you’ll find a tip for a BEGINNER and one for those ADVANCED.
BEGINNER
Q: How many voice over agents should you have?Â
You want to try and get representation in the different regions of the country – Southeast, Northeast, Northwest, West Coast, East Coast and Midwest.
Why? Because that will help give you a good variety of VO opportunities and will hopefully prevent crossover (when you get a duplicate audition from two or more agents).
ADVANCED
Q:Â How to know when to leave or switch voice over agents?Â
You already know that representation should be a partnership between the talent and agent. Because of that, if there are…
COMMUNICATION ISSUES
DISHONESTY or LACK of TRANSPARENCY
MISALIGNED GOALS
TOO MANY CROSSOVER AUDITIONS
LACK OF OPPORTUNITY
I’ll never forget the first agent I left. Instead of communicating BEFORE leaving why I wasn’t happy, I got new representation, then sprung it on them after everything was set. What I should’ve done, is communicate my specific goals and ask if they thought they could help me with opportunities that aligned with those goals. We’ve since talked it through and are on great terms but don’t make the mistake I did.Â
Before you switch or leave…
make sure to communicate clearly and respectfully why you’re moving on
make sure you’ve been a good partner to the agent by doing the things you need to be a good voice actor.
