I honestly struggle with video game auditions. I try to approach them like TV/Film auditions, but I’ve only booked one and it was a reporter role that ended up being cut.
All in on animation coaching right now, so instead of adding video game coaching on top of that, I decided to look back at some of my notes from previous workshops/classes.
This one from Cissy Jones (first woman to break into trailers and a voice in games like The Walking Dead and Horizon: Zero Dawn) was simple enough to remember and deep enough to make an impact.
Whenever she gets a video game character audition, she said she asks these two questions:
1| What is their greatest FEAR?
and
2| What is their greatest DREAM?
She uses those two things to propel her character development.
Doesn’t that simplify the process of creating layers?! It also humanizes a character and that’s so crucial for video games today.
