The Answer:
Most VO agents, today, are asking that you have Source Connect before joining their roster. HOWEVER, some talent are already on with VO agents either because they’ve been with them for a long time or joined the on-camera division and automatically added to the VO roster. And then some talent are focused on online casting sites and direct marketing instead of agents.
What IS Source Connect?
It’s a software application that allows real-time audio streaming and remote recording. If you connect with a studio in New York and use Source Connect, they can record you straight from your booth with the same quality as your booth.
Since you have to pay a subscription fee for Source Connect, many talent are hesitant to get it before they know there will be a consistent need.
Don’t Have Source Connect? Do This!
If you’re anxious to pull the trigger, you can always buy a 2-day Source Connect license for $25. If I were you, I’d buy one NOWand test it out, so you know it works. You can do the SC v3 or SC v4. If you book a job, you’ll need to find out which version the studio you’ll be connecting with is using and get that one.
If you’re with an agent, I’d let them know that you’ve tested Source Connect and it worked great but if you book a job using SC, you’ll buy a 2-day license. Most agents should understand.
