Need help discussing payment with your clients? It’s a big part of running your own business, so being able to negotiate a fair rate is such an important skill.
Trecia, who is a great voice actor and in our VO mentorship group, recently asked this question about an E-Learning Rate Quote –
“I was asked my rate for an E-Learning project. There will be labeling/splitting the files involved. How much should I quote for splitting the files?”
Because E-Learning is one of the genres being heavily impacted by AI, my suggestion was this…
Make the client feel like you’re giving them a great deal, while not sacrificing your bottom line.
I encouraged her to tell the client that typically there is a charge for splitting and labeling the files but she’ll waive that charge for them.
For a 30 minute e-learning project, that may be an average of 15 files. The GVAA rate guide suggests $1/split. A reasonable per word price for e-learning is $0.25/word. So charge them $0.27/word and your $15 will be covered in that.
I am never about taking advantage of any client or anyone but with AI, clients are looking for ways to cut corners budget-wise. This way they believe they’re getting a great deal, while you’re not sacrificing your income.
