As a voice talent, have you ever thought about starting a podcast? It can be really beneficial to your career in several ways. One of those ways is it gives you material to submit for jobs. I’ve had several requests for podcast clips for certain VO jobs.  This month on the Atlanta Voiceover Studio + ProVoiceoverTraining.com podcast, we talk with TIM HELLER, voice talent and host of the 2nd Cup Podcast. He talks about the pros & cons of hosting a podcast. Before you start yours, check out his episode and the tips below!

There are a bunch of great voice talents in our community who have started a podcast – Farrah Haidar, Billie Jo Konze (with Brandon Duke), and even our admin, Cadden, just to name a few.

I’ve had 3 podcasts: The Heidi Rew Show, the Encourage Minute and the Atlanta Voiceover Studio podcast. Here are the top 3 tips to keep in mind if you’re thinking of starting a podcast.

Check out Tim’s story on the Atlanta Voiceover Studio podcast as well!

1| MAKE SURE THE VOLUME is BETWEEN -12db & -6db

Because people are listening via their phones or computers and usually while doing other things – driving or cleaning – the volume should be a little higher than usual. You don’t want it to clip but higher than usual.

2| BEFORE LAUNCHING – HAVE 3 EPISODES IN THE CAN

The initial launch is really important for the charts. Before you launch, have several episodes you can publish right away. This gives people a good amount of content to listen and keep listening to.

3| DECIDE ON A REALISTIC CONSISTENCY

The one thing I hear from EVERYONE who has done a podcast is – “It’s a lot more work than I realized.”

100% true.

That’s why I transitioned from doing The Heidi Rew Show podcast, an interview format, to the Encourage Minute podcast, a short story format. I knew saving time from researching guests, booking guests, interviewing them, editing, etc would allow me to continue podcasting.

For the Atlanta Voiceover Studio + ProVoiceoverTraining.com podcast, we release one episode per month which allows us to be consistent.

Record the first three episodes and note how much time it took for each. Now figure out how often you can find that time. Once a month? Once a week? If you feel like that may even be too frequent, consider releasing seasons at a time. Maybe you do two seasons a year with just 4 episodes.

Let us know if you plan on starting a podcast! We’d love to listen!
